Have you stumbled upon this page while searching the web for a solution to your most intimate and embarrassing pee, poop, or sex concerns? You may be wondering what is a Pelvic Physical Therapist and what happens during a session? At Oasis PT & Pelvic Health, you get the benefit of years of experience, intuitive care, and passion for health and wellness for all.
CONSENT – You are in charge of your body. Our therapists never want to make you emotionally or physically uncomfortable. You are in charge of your body and can say “no” at any point during the exam. We welcome questions and believe in education to empower.
SHARE STORY – We want to know you…your story…the beginning, symptom progression, impact on your life, treatments to date, and personal goals. As a holistic practice, we believe in the mind-body connection and want to understand all possible contributing factors to your issues. The intake forms ask about your medications and medical history with particular attention to gut health, physical injuries, surgeries, mental wellbeing, hormones, and uro-genital function. A lifestyle screen is reviewed including sleep, nutrition, physical activity, fitness program, stress rating and coping tools. Details of your pain, bladder, bowel, and sexual health will be discussed in an open, non-judgement zone.
ASSESSMENT – We assess and treat the whole body…nerves, muscles, fascia, and joints. Even bowel, bladder, pelvic, and sexual function concerns are influenced by connecting body parts. Our therapist will take a look at how your body is put together and how you move.
EXTERNAL – There typically is an assessment of your spine, abdomen, extremities, and an exam of the outside of the pelvic area. It often involves palpating (using fingers to feel what your muscles are doing) your perineal area (over or under clothes) and/or a visual inspection of the genitals. Our goal is to figure out what is causing your issues and help you solve them.
INTERNAL – Advanced, specialty training allows for an internal pelvic exam. Our therapist will explain your anatomy to you as they examine using gloves and lubricant. You will be draped and placed into a comfortable position. There are no stirrups or speculums used for the intra-vaginal or intra-rectal exam. We are assessing pain or discomfort, abnormalities in the tissue, your ability to control and coordinate (squeeze and relax) different parts. It is often a new and empowering experience for people.
REVIEW – After a thorough assessment, we review the findings and possible contributing factors. You will understand how things are functioning and set goals together with your therapist. You are encouraged to communicate and ensure the plan can fit into your lifestyle.
PLAN OF CARE – Depending upon your issues, your care plan may include:
- Breathing techniques
- Manual hands-on treatment techniques
- Stretches and mobility exercises
- Corrective strength training
- Posture, ergonomic, and/or body mechanic education
- Toileting habits may be adjusted to impact urination and bowel elimination
- Diary log of input and output pending your concerns
- Some changes in the way you eat or drink
